Hi guys, I have found my model # but it doesn't match anything I have looked up about the outdrive model numbers. Mine is 98C709, which I can't seem to find anywear on the web. Could someone please me out.
I have gone out to check 3 times to make sure my eyes weren't going on me.

Thanks

I have had much better luck finding information with serial numbers rather than model numbers. Have you tried that?

'76 OMC is an electric shift Stringer. They really didn't have model numbers on 'em. You should be hooked to a Ford 302, right?

Yes it is a 302, I know next to nothing about the OMC outdrives, but I will get the books and educate myself. Thanks for your help.

There's a little bit about the OMC Sterndrives out on the web. The best thing to do is hunt down some manuals. Here and here are some things on the forums to give you quick information.

I've got a 165 (Chevy Inline 6 - 250) electric shift. You will hear many a bad thing about the drives, and they are a little finicky and you'll be turning wrenches on it plenty. But on the overall, I like mine quite a bit and I've been able to keep it running relatively inexpensively (and I'm not all that mechanical). Weigh costs carefully before you put a lot of money into one, but if you can keep it alive it'll be a decent drive for you.

Thanks southkogs for the links, they're great. I will try to keep this old girl alive and hopefully learn how to keep it running smoothly for years to come.

Okay I have a 1977 OMC 190. I don't where some of you get your info but I have serial numbers for my outdrive and the engine. helps when you order parts. I have found parts at Sierra.IBoats, And Seaway Marine in Seatle,WA. I have been able to reseal and redo the water pump as well as new ball gears and transom seal for just over $400. If you don't mind wrenching on it yourself you will get a good outdrive. They are not made to be beat on like a Merc or a Volvo, but they will give you some good times on the water. I have had mine in saltwater as much as in freshwater. Just remember to flush it good and you are good to go.
