OMC Stringer Anode Replacement

Below are two Anodes. The first is the Transom Anode and I saw no doubt that it needed to be replaced. I did so with an OMC Replacement. Thanks Ebay! The second one I am not too certain about. The part is mounted directly to the underside of the Intermediate Casing, does not have any Errosion and feels somewhat different than the Transom Anode. To me it appears to have a lot of corrosion on the entire part. I have tried a SS wire wheel and could not even begin to clean it. Does anyone know if this a Zinc style anode and does it appear to need replacing?

:} BRP lists the Intermediate Casing Anode mentioned in my previous post actually as a Grounding Plate. Confused here. Can someone tell me what this actually does and what kind of condition does it need been in to do what it is designed to do? :}

Not sure what your top picture is of. But basically the anode is supposed to attract galvanic current that would otherwise go after the outdrive.

Yours (bottom pic) still looks good as they are self sacrificing and go away as they do their work. Take if off and scrub it clean.

Two generations later, they added an anode block to the outdrive itself.

The Top anode is attached near the bottom of the Transom with machine bolts. On the inside a cable is then connected to the Engine Block.

I am finding scrubing this one has become a real chore. For the moment I will put it back on the Intermediate and replace before taking it out for WOT trials later this winter. Their cost is low.

Footnote: The Black Anchor paint has been removed. The Boot Ring has been removed, cleaned and is being prepped for painting. The Rubber Boot has been removed and it being replaced.

He, he! You know this forum already (noting the "other" stuff that needs to be done before everyone tells you!)

Just curious, why are the rollers so high in the rear?

Nice ball gear, by the way!

Previous Owner bought a new trailer fitted for a 25' boat then put this 24' Skipjack back on it without making the proper adjustments to the winch post. As timing goes, the boat is being repositioned on the trailer this week so I can move the Winch aft about a foot. I have considered replacing the Ball Gear, but I have decided to clean and paint it instead.

The anode attached to the intermediate looks good.
The one pictured below it looks like a generic add-on.
Do not paint either one.

Replacement of the lower one might be a good idea. It appears to be doing most of the sacrificing. Which is a good thing!

There should be another on the drive as well.

The one attached to the Transom is actually listed in my parts catalogue and I replaced it with an OMC Part. There is a small cosmetic difference between the two.

I have not found an anode on the drive. Boomyal mentioned they were incorporated on later drives. I might do some research and see if one can be adapted. I have a 74-75 225HP OMC Drive.

Re: OMC Stringer Anode Replacement

My stringer has a grounding wire that goes from the exhaust housing to the intermediate drive. (Which is obviously attached to engine/ground/anode on transom like Lyndy's...

I don't need another one on my outdrive do I? I have always assumed the grounding wire took care of it.

I have absolutely no corrosion on my outdrive after 2 years of ownership.

(Sorry Lyndy -- I'm not meaning to derail or hijack your thread!)

They did not add one to the drive until the advent of the full mechanical shifting 800/400. (what, about '80-'81?) It was located just above the cav plate above the propeller.

You cannot adapt it to earlier units. Just be sure you keep your OD to Intermediate ground cable intact.

Aktually guys, I got that picture off of ebay. I never really noticed that it was being held up by a fixture. It does look interesting.

8) Had the boat moved back a foot today. Nice to be in a Marina with a Mechanic 100 yards away with a Hoist! Now installation of some Bennett Trim Tabs should prove much easier to install. 8)
