Howdy,

a 2nd NOPE. You'll either have to rebuild your drive or find another similar drive.

If you wanted to change to a Cobra (and you wouldn't want to), you would have to replace the transom and rebuild the "stringers" in the boat...........It would be cheaper (and easier) to just replace the boat!

Re: omc stringer cobra swap

Guys, I think we have a small misunderstanding here. "FullStringer" would like to replace the LOWER unit on his mech shifted OMC stringer with a Cobra lower unit. I guess he is not talking about the whole sterndrive.

In other words, he would like to bolt his Mech Stringer upper unit onto a Cobra lower unit, because his lower unit is probably broken, and he has found a Cobra drive that could be used for spare parts.

The answer to whether that can be done is: possibly

The lower units on Mech shifted OMC stringers and Cobras have a similar housing, but the components that are bolted on top of the lower housing are different, and so is the vertical shaft.

If boltholes and such matches, so you can just switch the parts, I don't know.

Replacing the whole drive is a completely different story, as "HT32BSX115" says.
Actually, I'm doing that these days(years)
Bought an old boat, with two Electric shift OMC stringers, and decided to replace the whole damn thing with Volvo Penta SX drives and Mercedes Diesel engines. (and restore the boat completly)

Here are some pictures, you probably don't understand much of the writing, but it gives you an idea about what is going on.

Re: omc stringer cobra swap

The lower units on Mech shifted OMC stringers and Cobras have a similar housing,

similar, mostly in shape and looks, but not compatible in any way.

He could use the trim tab and anode...gears/dogs inside are actually the same for some years. But nothing swappable as a unit.
Entire shift process and propshaft are very different.

the E/J V6 outboard lower is also similar, but not compatible in any way.

you have a PM, fullstringer
