OMC stringer cooling path question?

Ok Stringer folks, put my new to me 400 electric stringer drive together onthe Seacraft last summer and bolted the pivot shafts to the transon mounts last fall but didn't finish putting the water side plates on over the shafts before winter. Just started again and found mud dauber wasps or some little mud carrying bugs had built in the bolt holes and coolant passages both heading to the drive and the engine so dug the mud and buggas out - lesson learned but when I blow on the shaft opening (both sides) its blocked. Hose is off at thermostat housing.
Am i right in assuming that its a clear passage to the thermostat? If so there may be more of th damn bugs in there.
But the bigger puzzle is that i see a small hole looking in from the port side pivot shaft coolant passage that is in the casting at the back of the passage where it takes a turn toward the engine.
Am i right the this is probably meant to have a screw plug? Don' t want to pull the drive back off if its supposed to be there as a weep hole.
But if it needs a plug what size is it?
Thanks guys, this is my first stringer.

If it's a small hole (about 1/8in) that points towards the top of the ball gears, it's to lubricate the ball gears when your up on plain. There should be one on each side and a tin plate over the gears to direct the flow. Water's not the best lubricant, but better than nothing.
Your right about the water flow. It should be clear through to the hose going into the thermostat housing.

Thanks Wrench3, saved me pulling the drive back off tomorrow. I would never have guessed the little hole was there to wet the ball gear. I'll look for one on the starboard side too
