How do I tell which Stringer drive I have? All I know about it is that it's an electric shift and I was told it was behind a small block Chevy V8 (327 possibly). I thought there was a plate on the intemediate housing but I cant find it. I can post pictures if needed.

Electric Shift will place it 1977 or older. The year boat will help also. There are enough Stringer Folks on this forum to help ID the drive. Pictures Port, Starboard and of the Exhaust will help refine the probable year of the drive.

High Profile Electric Shift - need the numbers off the tag on the upper gearcase to tell anything more about it.

Looking at the pictures you posted and my manual I think it should be an type 3 around 1966-1977 looking at the exhaust rudder. Look to see if it has 5 bolts on the exhaust housing cover? Manual says type 3 were used behind higher horse power applications. Also look for id numbers on valve covers or around boat.

I can't find a tag anywhere on it.

The tag is normally riveted to the upper gearcase starbord side - you have to steer the drive full left to see it - if that's gone, there's a welch plug in the top of the upper gear case with a number in it. However, either of those numbers mean very little if the drive's ever been remanufactured in it's 30+ years.... turning input ballgear with 12V applied to one clutch and counting output ratios ......or opening it and counting gear teeth the only real way to verify what you have for sure.

OMC never used a 327, so it's hard to ID- as the boat is not all original. All the V8 lowers used the same ratios on electric shifts I think, but the uppers had all different ratios in them.

Don't suppose you know what the original engine was? OMC used a lot of 307's in that era. Seloc manual can tell you what drive came with that -ratios and model numbers.

Are you just trying to eBay it? - you have more than enough info about it for that.

Re: OMC Stringer I. D.

The Exhaust/Rudder indicates 1972 and older and the Exhaust Housing indicates 1971 and older. Depending on what boot you have it would possibly narrow the year down even farther. Right now it appears to between 1969-1971. If your boot frame is square it will indicate 1968 or older. My guess is 1971 if it is a round boot. This likely can be confirmed if you let me know what year hull it was attached to.
