OMC Stringer oil

Hello all.

I'm new to the forums, so apologies if this is a dumb question, (I tried searching to no avail)

What kind of oil is used in an OMC Stringer outdrive? (yeah yeah, it sucks, I know) I can see several places to fill oil (one on top, one on the leg) but I don't know what do use. The engine is a V-6 Buick.

Does anyone know about a downloadable service manual

The boat was free (or as free as a boat could be) and in good condition, but I wanted to go though the drive before I took it out. I'm an experienced car mechanic, but new to boats.

Thanks so much, Graham

Re: OMC Stringer oil

the stringer has 3 parts, the lower unit, the upper and the intermediate
3 separate oil fills.

Intermediate and Upper Gearcase can use either 80W-90 or OMC Type C
Lower unit requires Type C only
Clutch housing can use 30weight, or 80W90, or Type C

I had a 81 800 stringer converted to full mechanical shift,I used merc hi performance gear lube in all 3 gearboxes for the 5 years I had the boat,no problems. the current owner has also been trouble free for 8 years with the same gear lube

How can that be? I thought they sucked! I wonder how many times you and he had to pull the drive and do an alignment or change the impeller?:D

He said it was a Buick V6 so it's pre 1973.
Don't put mercruiser oil in the lower. It will not work.
Type C in the lower only!

Evinrude sells a Premium blend oil that is a replacement for type C. I will get the exact name and a UPC number for you. You MUST use type C or it must say it is a substitute for type C.

Thanks to all for the input!

I really appreciate it.

And yes, you're correct it's pre-73, it's a 71.

Re: OMC Stringer oil

to WizeOne,when I bought the boat (21 ft Campion) the lower gearcase had just been replaced with a full mechanical shift unit. I ran it for that summer, the upper gearcase output shaft and the waterpump shaft stripped that fall. I did a major overhaul of the upper, water pump, and drive shaft setup that winter, never touched it after that exept to change oil,the new owner only put about 30 hours a year on so it didnt need much upkeep. incidently there is no alingment on a stringer, the leg is up or down, trim moves the motor and all, glad to be rid of it :D
