Went back at looked at the 1978 Sea Ray I am thinkin" of buying. Have been told the OD is a Stringer 800.The model # is 981873. The bottom unit does not have the zinc plates on it. So, I guess it doesn't have the update.
My question is: should I stay away from this boat now? What were the problems that they had with this drive? The boat only has 564 hrs. on it and is in excellent condition. But, it hasn't been run for a couple of years. The valve cover has "OMC 230" on it. Is this an okay engine.
Still haven't made up my mind about buying it.
Asking price is $5000.

Thanks for all you help in helping me decide.

Re: OMC stringer out drive questions

I think everyone who had an opinion gave it in your previous post, both for the outdrive and the price.

The motor is either a ford 351w or a chevy 350. Either one would be a good motor, dependent on condition.

should I stay away from this boat now?
Yes .....
What were the problems that they had with this drive?
There were Many,.......... Besides, It's 30 Years old,+ has been out of production for 20 of them,..... And,... The Manufacturer Doesn't Exist Any More.......
Parts are getting to be between Slim,+ NLA.........
And,.. When You Can find the Parts,.... You'll need a 2nd Mortgage to Pay for them......
But, it hasn't been run for a couple of years.
That's Even Worst............
The valve cover has "OMC 230" on it.
No Doubt a SBC of 1 configuration or another..........
Asking price is $5000.
That's TWICE what it's worth..........
Still haven't made up my mind about buying it.
It's Your Money,..............
But,.... You'll be parting with ALOT More than the Purchase Price,..............

Thats laying it right on the line, Bondo. I don't think it's what he wanted to hear though. Only 564 hrs, I didn't think an 800 would last that long.
