Just to make it clearer to me, is the mechanical and hydro/mechanical shift the same animal as opposed to the electric shift drive?

Nope. Electric Shift Stringers were the early ones, then came the hydro-mechanical and then mechanical shifts.

They are not the same drives.

Well even though supposidly my boat and drive is an 82 , then it could be either hydro/mechanical or mechanical I guess. I'll have to wait till I uncover it. thanks

Based on the picture you provided in your other thread. You have a hydro-mechanical shift unit. Here is a picture of my hydro mechanical shift Stringer drive

iS THAT A MECHANICAL bolted to the Hydro mechanical upper? I ask because of the color of the drive, and The anode is not visable.

Re: omc stringer question

The anode is only on the mechanical stringer, not the hydro. The upper gear housings are the same between the hydro and full mechanical drives.
