I have a 74 High Profile Stringer Outdrive mounted to a 5.0 Chevy 2bbl Rochester Carb. I have an oppurtunity to pick up a 73 225 HP High Profile Stringer Drive that is presently mounted to a 5.7 Chevy. My present Drive is probably not a 225 HP, probably 190HP. Any performance or compatibility issues?

If they're both high profile, and both have the same steering (push pull or tru-course) it sould be a direct and easy swap. The upper, and therefore overall gear ratio of the drive for the more powerful engine will be lower. You would have to go down in prop pitch by changing props to keep your WOT rpm in that 4200-4600 range. If you're running 18 pitch now, you could try a 16. If you are running 14 now.... might have a problem, props arent very efficient below 14P for planing...

Ah, there may be a mystery. The only marking on my present prop is that it is a Michigan Prop and I needed a Magnifying Glass to see that. No Diameter or Pitch Stamp. From everything I have read on the various OMC forums is that ID'ing the pitch of the prop is difficult. Would a good Prop Shop be able to determine it?

unless someone has ground it off or corrosion has gotten it, all michigan wheels I have seen have a number stamped into them. you can go to their web site and cross reference the number and it will tell you what prop you have.

Flashback, I agree about Michigan Marking their Props properly. I would have to say this Prop is badly worn. A picture would be worth a thousand words.

Lyndy, like Bondo said, I guess the prop shop would be your best bet.. at least they could tell you what the pitch is even if the prop is shot...good luck

bond-o, Stopped by my local marine shop and it took them about two minutes with a gauge tool and told me I had a 16 pitch prop. So it looks like I can go to a 14 Pitch if neccessary. I think before I pick up another drive, a WOT test may be in order. Getting the drive I am looking at for $200 delivered is still very tempting. In any event, Thanks for the lead and at least now I have made one more step in my journey of owning an OMC Sterndrive.
