if you slam outdrive all the way down hard and fast it locks up.

don't do that, you'll break the roll pins in the horizontal shaft

the switch is a spring centered toggle so you can just "bump" it or jog it

I had the same issues, however you always want to just bump it down if you can. What I did to fix my issue, was I found out the quadrant gear was jamming in the channel when it was all the way down. You can use some chalk or something and find out where its binding then use a grinding wheel and slowly shave off that area.

I only had to take of a 1/8 inch or so from a small area at the end and didn't have the issue anymore. I even seem to recall when I was doing the research on this that there was a recall or replacement quadrant due to this, but I could be wrong.

"if you slam outdrive all the way down hard and fast it locks up"

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this."

"Then don't do that!" :D

This is a common thing if you let the outdrive slam down. It torques the clutch shaft and binds everything up, although, it is possible that the quadrant is binding as in Cuyose's case if the quadrant is warped. As already mentioned above, just 'bump' the switch a couple of times to lower it.

Re: omc stringer tilt trouble

This problem annoys me to no end as well. I of course agree with the advice about just bumping the switch down until it touches the bumpers on the bottom.

However, sometimes I've had a hard time hearing when it hits the bottom and it's bound up or other times I think I have more room than I do to go and end up slamming it a little harder than I should & it binds. I've been trying to think of a way to add some sort of rubber bumper somewhere in the system that would pad it from bottoming out like that and binding. If I come up with something clever I'll have to post it
