Hello,
I have a Duel OMC string set up and i just replace the Water Pump and noticed that one of the Upper Ball Joint Bearings were bad. I had a Boat place replace the bearings (since you needed a shop press) and i just put my outdrive back on the boat and when i went to fire it up there is a whining sound coming from the outdrive. Never use to make that noise prior to this.

I read some where that it is the shims but not sure which ones. I tried to use the same shim setup (with new shims) but not sure how to re-shim properly. I see that there are two shims, One that you put behind the bearing in the back of the upper ball joint housing (looks hard to get to) and the shims where a gasket would be when you put the ball joint back on.

I read the book but its kinda confusing. Can anyone help with this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you put the ball joints back in the same orientation as before. What I mean by that is did you mark the orientation so that each ball on the transom side hitting the exact ball on the drive side as before??

You said you replaced bearings but your title says replace ball gear. Did you replace both?

Yes i did replace all. The only thing we did not replace was the Gears and the Ball Gear Shaft. Everything else is new.

thanks do you think its because the ball gears? Do i need to replace the one on the intermediate drive too? it does not have as much wear as the other ball gear did but there is still wear there...

??

I would say that is definitely your noise. I thought they were supposed to both be replaced at the same time. The new one may wear into the old one and eventually be ok but I am definitely not sure about that.

Just to be sure we are talking about the same thing here. We are talking about these guys right?

Yes those are it. I replaced the one on the Outdrive and not the other one because it was really worn but the one on the Intermediate drive did not have that much wear on it. it has a grove on it but not like the other one. The outdrive one was almost half gone.

I just want to make sure that its not he bearings on the inside. and i have oil and its filled to the correct level.

Thanks again.

I think I'm as confused as Howard. You say you replaced bearings, and also say you replaced every thing except the gears and the shaft. If you replaced any of the roller bearings in the upper gear case, you will have to re-shim every thing from scratch!

Your on the right track.
You shimmed it incorrectly. Read book. Gears need small clearance and ball gears need small clearance too.
Read book again to see how much and how to check.
Good luck

I just had mine replaced and the mechanic told me that you were supposed to replace both as a set.

Sorry about the confusion. And yes i replaced everything but the shaft and gears. Im going to tear down and re-shim everything again correctly per the NEW book i just found... my old book does not say how to shim.

Thank you, Yes i will read my new book that i found that says in detail how to re-shim everything and install everything correctly as my last book just said to re-install in opposite order as tearing it down. I guess it always helps to have the correct book. :)

And yes that's what they told me too. I have already purchased the new ball gear for the intermediate drive part and when i tear the outdrive off i will be replacing those as well.

Thanks everyone for the help. Have a great day. Im going to post a thread for youtube so you can hear the whinning sound im talking about.
