OMC Tach. Is the harness required?

Hello,
I Have a 1985 OMC Seadrive 1.6L and and OMC control box from the early 90s. The control box does have the three wire tach hook up coming off it. My question is do I have to buy the wire harness for the tach, or can I just cut the plug off of the end of the wires coming out of the control box, connect heat shrink loop terminals, and connect to the tach? If my understanding is good, the black goes to the ground, the purple goes to the power on tach, and the gray is the sender. Is the "harness" just for the convenience of plug and play?

The harness is as you say "just for the convenience of plug and play". If you know what you're doing, and it does sound that way, cut and solder, whatever. Your color coding is correct.
