I have a 1989 OMC 2.3L Cobra, I am replacing the Exhaust seal in the Lower exhaust tube.
Being that I am rather ignorant regarding boats and they are a little touchy, I thought I would ask for some opinions as to which way to install this thing.
Let me know if I go with option one or option two.
Thanks David

Howdy,

Option 1 is the correct way....(IF it's closed by gravity)

It should (from gravity) be closed and when exhaust gases flow, it will open.

Long end is the operating end, so if you push on the long end of the flapper from the top, it should open. If you imagine water rushing in and hitting only the long end, the flapper should shut.

OK so I am probably making a very simple thing into more than it needs to be... but thats why you guys are here.. Right.

So option 3 has the long end of the flapper facing down. It opens (in my mind) when exhaust gases pass and when water is coming up the tube it should close.:D
So the pic below shows the flapper closed.

Option 3..

Thanks for the quick replys!!

Yeah, #3 is better except now pull the pin and rotate it (in the horiz plane) 180* CW or CCW and you'll have it.

They're not completely closed even just sitting there but if water sloshes up into the tube, it WILL close.

And by the way Option 1 was correct only if the long end was "down" (it was hard to see in the pic....)

If the "large" end is "up" in the first picture, the exhaust pressure will close it and prevent exhaust from exiting!

OK I think I have it now.
Thanks for all the help. I am glad I asked because I sure enough had it in there upside down.
