OMC telltale

Hi, I finally got my 1987 Cobra 4.3 together and running. It has a telltale water stream comming out of the back of the water pump but there is a trim piece that covers it up when installed. I was wondering why they put the trim piece on, is it for looks or to cause the telltale to splash water on the upper drive for cooling?

i am not sure about the exact function of the trim piece - but i would put it on if you have it. it may not harm the upper drive as far as not cooling it, but it sounds like a good idea!
