If you're careful, a bench vise and a large pair of channel locks worked for me. Put the lower 1/4 in the vise, clamp just enough to get some spring compression, then take one hand on the channel locks on the top, and another with your snap ring pliers and seat it up. Before releasing the vise, tap the ring gently with a drift to ensure it has seated. Of course before doing any of this you will make sure to clean your parts thoroughly. Rust never sleeps.

Yes. You cant put it in there dry. I wouldn't worry about soaking it, just clean the steel plates with a wire brush and parts wash, take a bristle scrub brush to the friction plates with parts wash, dry all - then smear a nice film of engine oil on each of the clutch friction plates as you install them. Once all is together and you go to put it in the housing, you will want to replace the seal on the housing, the drive gear (quadrant gear) and don't forget about the seal on the worm gear shaft going towards the tilt motor. Ignore the factory advice to place oil inside. pack it good with grease and your done.

Ok i finally got the tilt working, man omc what was they thinking, first off took forever just to get the motor out, then a piece was broke, luckly i had spare whole transom that i used for parts,i left the 3 shims out,so its not wanting to go all the way up,i was thinking it may have been too tight clutch pack, didn't want it to get stuck tring to come out water,so its not perfect, barely pull up while triming comes up fast,go's down fast with no help, guess them shims are to make it tighter,i don't have the clutch pack with the alen wrench tight.
