Re: OMC Tilt Gear

There's a cupped washer spring on the end of a stack of clutch plates in the reducer housing. They tend to slip when water gets past the shaft seal and mixes with the motor oil in there.

On the outer end of the clutch or behind it? when I removed it , I pulled the cover off and sterted to remove a sreies of washers then the clutch plates all the way back to a clip at the farthest inside section. So this sping, is it inside the long gear coming from the inside of the boat.. thanks for the info

Re: OMC Tilt Gear

thereis no "lock down", the clutch pack keeps the outdrive down. if the clutch pack is not working correctly then it won't keep it down. the outdrive will creep up a little with use and when the drive is in reverse and if you gun the engine it will pull it out of the water, be carefull in reverse!!!! the long shaft you are talking about is from the tilt motor and has a spring which is the hammer coupler. please get a manual to get the right repair procedure on the clutch pack

Mine is an '84 but I expect yours is similar;

On the cover end of the shaft is a circlip, then a washer about 1?" diameter, then 3 cupped washers 2-3/4" dia. stacked, (that's the spring), then the clutch pack.

If you can overdrive the clutch by lifting or pushing the outdrive by hand, it's slipping.

the manual for the boat, if it exists, will not help you, you need the manual for the omc 800 drive package, boat brand is irrelevent to drive package, Clymer, Seloc or an OMC manual are what you need, OMC manual is the best. the other two will help in most situations

I do not think he has an 800 series drive. The 400/800 did not show up for another 4-5 years. Based on the year of the boat it is likely to be a High Profile Stringer. Similar to the picture below. Ebay has a number of manuals available and Ken Cook has reprints of OMC Manuals. Based on the year of the boat the Outdrive should be 1972-1974.

Ken Cook:

Do not suggest Third Party Manuals. Been there done that.

The 400 and 800 are similar looking. Below is a picture of the upper portion of a 400

Hope this helps
