OMC Tilt Housing output seal

Hi all,

In the process of re-sealing my 1978 OMC 400 series stringer outdrive. I've started re-assembling the intermediate housing and hit a snag. I pulled a seal from the output of the tilt clutch housing. It is the seal that goes around the shaft that holds the small gear that drives the tilt quadrant.
Anyway, the kit I received does not come with that same seal. It does have 2 seals with the same diameter, but they are thinner single spring seals.
If I put the 2 thinner seals back to back, they are thicker than the one I removed.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

-Ryan

The intent is a double lip to help keep the water out.

WizeOne - Thanks for the reply.

I understand the intent is to keep the water out and oil in, but the 2 seals lined up back to back are thicker than the double lipped single seal that I removed. I think that if I were to push both seals in and flush with the outside of the housing, they would impede on the inside steel race that the spur gear shaft rides on.

I think I'm going to head to the dealer tomorrow and see if I can get the original style seal that I removed, unless someone can confirm that the 2 seals put back to back are what I should use.

Thanks,
-Ryan

I confirm it! You probably cannot even get the original single seal any longer. I installed the set about 3 summers ago. I cannot remember what the limiting factor was for depth insertion but I just went out and checked mine from the exterior. The outer seal casing sticks out of the housing a good 1/8", possibly a little more.

Wizeone - Thanks again for the quick reply!
I guess I'll be using the 2 seals, back-to-back..

Hey,

I back WizeOne 110% on this one. Did mine this past winter.

The only thing is, as long as my memory still serves, I recall that the "lips" do not face in the same direction. As long as I still have my marbles, it was either [ ] or ] [ . The correct way was on the litterature that came with the kit. I am currently scouring my shop to see if I still have those papers, but I fear that I do not.

Also give these threads a peek before you close it up.

the lips face away from each other. they fit and are no problem to install.

Just a note when you install the shaft be sure to turn it when you are putting it in so that the seals will seat right on the shaft. I replaced mine this spring , first time since I bought the boat, when I just pushed the shaft in the rubber part of the seal that keeps water out buckled and did not seat on the shaft. did this three times before I turned it while pushing it in, then it seated on the shaft fine.
