Not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes. Got the new transom seal installed so now I am moving to the tilt mechanism. I have a new motor, new hammer coupler but the tilt worm gear will not move. I removed the motor and put a screw driver to the mechanism and it will not turn. Is it possible that the clutch assy is froze up and can it be restored without taking it all apart?....

You have all been a great help so please try this one on.

The clutch asembly is actualy pretty easy to take out... just don't take the 'c' clips off that hold the clutch together on that little shaft.
Is your outdrive up or down right now? if it's up, take the 'c' clip of the small gear underneath that makes the foot go up and pull the gear.
Take the cover off the clutch asbly. it also holds the one end of the shaft that the clutch is on. By loosening a few things like that you should be able to find where it's binding.

Is binding a very common thing with these things? It has not been operated for some time as far as I can tell. Would a good shot of WD-40 help to loosen things up?

I had one that had similer isues due to bent/misaligned parts after the foot met with a rock.
A friend of mine also had the same isues because of worn bushings the screw was not meshing with the clutch properly and binding.
He solved his problems by rebuilding and getting all the extra loose out of it.
I solved mine by throwing out the OMC and instaling a diferent drive.

Larry - just for clarification: the stern drive is off, correct?

If it's on there, a screwdriver from the inside won't make that gear turn ... up or down.

Stern drive is on but the large flat plate gear is off.

Glad to report that the problem was solved with a good dose of WD-40. I think the clutch was just froze up due to being idle for so long...Thanks for your inputs.

OK I have found one more thing that does not look right. There is a washer on the shaft that the clutch pack sits on. The washer is between the clutch pack and the cover. Is the washer supposed to be against the clutch pack? Mine has 1/8 " space between the washer and the pack. Also the washer is tight on the shaft and I cannot slide it up against the pack where I think it belongs. SSSSSOOO when I tighten the blts on the cover the washer tight against the cover and is not allowing the system to turn.

Wkats up here?

OK I am buying two gaskets for the cover. These are supposed to act as shims also and should move the cover away from binding on the shaft...
