OMC Tilt Motor Bad?

Just bought a 1977 Searay SRV220. It's an OMC MD# 990240E. I've just about got all the bugs worked out,(I think) including replacing the lower unit which lost the forward magnet clutch after five whole minutes in the water. Here's the next question. When trying to raise the outdrive I can hear the motor "click" and it acts like it wants to go up. If you lift on the drive and have someone depress the switch it will raise. Lowers just fine. Pretty sure the motor is shot, just wanted to poll the experts. I pulled the worm gear and shaft and they look fine. Second question...Is there an easy way to get to the tilt motor without "Having to pull the entire engine!!" Makes me wonder who designed this stuff... Here's an idea, let's put a servicable part in a place that is not humanly possible to get to unless you pull the engine...Grrr

make sure that pivot pins on upper drive are well lubed....i had same problem until i greased the pivot pins.....could also be poor electrical connections...check them, especially ground...if all else fails, its probably the motor, which can be removed w/out removing engine...you may need to become a contorsionist to get to the bolts, but it can be done.

also......could be that the motor is rusty or dirty inside....once it is removed, take it apart and inspect and clean up if necessary...that may do the trick

Thanks Scott,

After I removed the worm gear I can lift the drive easily, so I'm thinking that it's in the motor. I guess I'll also check the clutch and make sure it's not binding somewhere. I'll throw the grease gun at the pivots and see if it helps. If not, this weekend will be a "drive down" weekend...lol

Kevin,

MOST of the time these can be nailed down to maintenance of the pivots as Scott said or poor electrical connections.

Have you drained the tilt box oil and inspect for water intrusion?

And no, there is no easy way to get that motor off without a few scrapes and cusses.

If you search, you'll find more than a few threads on this topic. A big one just last week.

Oh, ya don't have to pull the engine to get the tilt motor out but you may have to tear the boat apart. :p

IMHO, the biggest likelyhood is that your tilt motor is full of water and oil. There are remedies and solutions.

Thanks Keith & Scott,
I greased the pivots & I checked the clutch gear and not a drop of water in the oil. Came out clean and clear. The clutch seems to ok, at least I didn't see anything obviously wrong...Hmmm??? Anyone know if these motors be tested for ohms/resistance to determine if they are bad or not?

Re: OMC Tilt Motor Bad?

I forgot to mention that the tilt motor worked fine two weeks ago when I bought the boat. I took a test drive on the boat and all was good.

On the "Me as Captain" first voyage, I chalked the lower unit up to "one of those things that just happen". Full of lube, she just decided to pull a Murphy's law. Oh well, As Capt'n Ron say's....."If it's gonna happen...It's gonna happen out there"..lol

Oh, & Thanks Boomy
I'll slow down, catch my breath, and try not to tear the boat apart...lol

I'm sure there are remedies and solutions as you suggested.

And if I have to start it on a pair of muffs, I'll make sure I attach them with a bench vise...

OK,

Time to check out the electric circuits. You'll preferably need an extra set of hands for this one.

Do you have a manual with the wiring diagram?
The tilt motor is fed by solenoids up by the big harness plug near the carb. Check the solenoids for proper voltage when the tilt switch is triggered.

All connections should be cleaned of corrosion, reassembled and covered with liquid tape.
Make sure all ground points are cleaned. Especially the ground coming from the battery to the engine block.

Check the tilt motor connector plug for corrosion or bad wire.

If all these check out, then pull the tilt motor for service. I'd save that as a last resort.
