I have a 1975 Johnsons 70 HP. I have the trim that is mounted outside the trnsom brackets on the starboard side. I have replaced the motor and the resevoir and the valve body. Still no trim. Pump motor works good and valve body is pushing fluid. It appears to me that the valve in the starboard cylinder must be the culprit, since the port cylinder is just a slave cylinder. :) I can get to the valve but how does one find another. Are they available? Does anyone have a used one or a used starboard cylinder? In need of some Help? Thanks :)

Hi fishnpick.....well...the only thing you have there is tilt. No trim. The single cylinder doesn't have enough butt to trim the engine under way. It's only ment to tilt the motor all the way up or down. If your trying to trim the motor under way, ain't going to do much good.

Sorry bout that fish....misread your post. Ok....so it would seem that the TNT on your shaker ain't working.....trim part anyways. I really don't know of any valve in the cylinders. There are tees and elbows but no valves that I know off. The valves are all located in the pump assembley. Might be that you have one cylinder with a bad piston o-ring.

Re: OMC tilt trim cylinder

Hi OBJ and thanks for the reply. I do have trim. The tilt cylinders are inside the transom mounts and the two cylinders that are the trim are mounted outside the transom mounts as is the motor for the unit. This is the trim unit that could be purchased as an accessorie in 1975. Consist of a prestolite motor and pump. Some came with the calco setup. I have new pump and motor with new valve body but evidently the new pump is just circulating the fluid. I gues the valve is bad in the cylinder. The other cylinder does not have a valve and just operates as a slave to the starboard cylinder. In need of a valve to replace mine. If not a valve a used starboard cylinder. This would be the one without the trim gauge in it. That is is the port cylinder. Looking and looking and looking for a valve or cylinder. Thanks I read lots of your replys on the board. Nice to meet you..

Re: OMC tilt trim cylinder

Understand that OBJ. Im not the greatest in wording my messages to say what I want. I am going to tear down the starboard cylinder and reploace the O rings. The T that you speak of I though was a valve. I am an amateur so I could be wrong. Will check all of it out and let you know what I find. Might be the O ring. I have been told that the O ring kits with new wipers for the cylinder is available but have not found them as of yet. If you know of a part number for the kit or a supplier let me know. Thanks for the input.....

Here ya' go fishnpick....

O-ring kit PN 174520. 'bout $13 and some change per kit.

Watch the port cylinder. It contains the sending unit for the trim gauge. It's a wire wound tube. The pick up assembly is on the outside and will have to be removed to get the piston out.

I'm also posting a couple links for ya'. You can get reprints of OEM Service Manuals from either and I do recommend getting one. They'll save you a fortune in aspirin.... :)

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Keep us posted as to your progress...thanks.

Re: OMC tilt trim cylinder

Thanks OBJ. I would love to get a layout of the trim cylinders with part numbers and other info. My Clymers for this Johnson does not have a diagram or any info about the tilt trim cylinders. Has diagrams and info about the motor, valve body, res and wiring but nothing about the cylinders. I wiill let you know how I make out when I tear these down.......Thanks for your help.
