I have seen (on some boat forum) a tutorial on how to disassemble and rebuild the trim sensor (using a pot available from radio shack). Like an idiot I did not bookmark the page . Has anyone else seen this and where?

Re: OMC trim sensor rebuild???

What's broken on your trim sensor? the wires or is the potentiometer actually blown?

Not sure if it's the same, but I just "rebuilt" the sensor on my 98 Volvo SX. On mine, the wires broke right at the sensor housing - I'm guessing where most of the flexion takes place in the wires (but the pot was still good). I carefully ground out the "epoxy" type material that the pot was set into using a "dremel" tool and a carving bit. Only removing small amounts of material at a time...took about 1hr. The pot and soldered connections were metal, so it was evident when I passed through the "epoxy" to the pot & terminals. After cleaning material out, exposing the wire connections I de-soldered the broken wires, re-soldered a new "3 wire pig tail" and then mixed up some epoxy with thickener to a peanut butter consistency and poured it back in (over top) to seal everything up. Once cured, I soldered the new pig tail back to the existing one (removing an inch to eliminate any corroded portion) and it's good as new :)

Re: OMC trim sensor rebuild???

I found it again.... (it was this forum too). Not exactly what I thought it was tutorial wise but good enough.

In answer to questions asked: I am not sure what is wrong with my sending unit (too cold and snowy to check on it right now, just planning for summer). Replacing the sender isn't worth the cost for me (I trim by feel), but in teaching the fianc?e to drive the boat it would be nice to have it working. If it can be fixed for 10 bucks or so and some manual labor it is well worth the price to do.

Update: just looked at my sensor, My problem is actually only a broken wire (I am a terrible solderer, but luckily I have a friend that is a great solderer (makes his living repairing radios/electronics so I shall be paying him a visit with sensor in hand tomorrow).

Maybe the link posted below can help someone else out.

This is great info... IDK if I would put That much effort into the gauge... Yet it is nice to have all the stuff working... Should teach your gal how to trim by feel.. I think it is better..

I love a true cheap fix.. Any tard can replace a part, but repair takes a true mechanic.. Dying breed
