I am rewiring the whole thing, from top to bottom. Question is what size wire to use? It is running 24 volts, the existing wire looks to be around 12-14 gauge. Does that sound about right?

I would like to beef it up a bit , but there are 4 wires that have to go down the shaft and I dont think I could manage (4) #10 down the shaft to the motor.

Darren....find yourself the same gauge wire but with more strands of wire in it. Simply put, more strands in a wire gauge will pass current "easier".

Darren, the lengths of the wire and current that you want to put down it will decide how big the wire should be. For example if you had 14 guage wire and had 100 feet (from battery to device and back) of it and are running a device requiring 5 amps you would loose 1.29 volts in the wire. This is why you will see different guage wire depending on the appliance and the different lengths. They recommend a maximum of 10% voltage drop. That said if the wire that was there worked well with what you had and your not adding more loads then just replace it like for like.

Good luck

Chris

Re: OMC trolling motor

SOS Help lol

I got the motor wired back up. Not the wires from the battery, the internal wires from within the trolling motor itself. I replaced the brush set and new o-rings too. Got everything back and tried it out and it ran real slow on 24 volts. I have the 12/24 volt set up. When I switch it to 12volts BAMMMM It run real fast , 24 volt fast.

Then I noticed it was also running backwards DOH! I figure I must have accidentally put back the brushes in opposite order on the brush holder.????maybe???

Now with that said, can I just switch the two wires that go to the brushes on top???? or must I dig back into the belly of the beast and rewire the brushes arggggg!

Thanks

Re: OMC trolling motor

You've probably got th3 12/24 switch backwards. Running backwards maybe cause the feed polarity is wrong??? Swap the ground and the hot feeds.

Hey....what year is it anyways.....got a few hand drawings laying around here (somewhars)....might hep ya' some.

EDIT: Found the drawing....drop me a email at outboardjim@comcast.net and I'll pop it off to you.....:)

OBJ

I didnt touch or rewire the 12/24 switch. Just rewired everything inside the trolling motor. The 12/24 switch is in the foot pedal. I will shoot you an email for some diagrams
