Re: OMC trouble

I had that on my '84 OMC 5.7, would go into gear, (fwd or rev) then not want to come out to neutral. The idle was 600 rpm, the ESA module wasn't working. I replaced the module, a tug on the shifter activates it, making the engine stumble and dip to 350 rpm on the tack, and voila! Easy shifting again.

ESA or lower shift cable. If you can locate the ESA switch and depress it the engine should stumble. If it does the switch is working. If the switch is working you need to look at the shift cables or the adjustments.

Re: OMC trouble

I just replaced a motor that used all the switches to make the motor "stumble". All I did was to make sure the RPMs in idle were about 650 and it works like a charm. You will have a lot of "fun" trying to get the switch interruptor to work properly.

Re: OMC trouble

You have a ford so I wouldn't know. For 350 5.7 it is on the to back right side of the motor. Next to the distributor and behind the carb (that is if the motor is a chevy).

Follow your cables. It will be around where all the cables meet. That happened to me, i adjusted the cable and it worked for a week or two. i changed the cable and it works like butter all the time now. It's probably that time. You never said what year your boat was. You probably need the shift cable.

How often should the shift cables be replaced?

Re: OMC trouble

Without knowing the year model it's impossible to tell you how to proceed.

The 90 was a cone clutch (NO ESA) and the 87-89 models were dog clutches.

Your first order of business should be to get yourself a correct OEM OMC service manual.

Cheers,

Rick
