I was freshing up my carb up for the season, pulled it after work and went over it on the bench that night, the next morning I found out that I had left the key on and the battery was drained. I charged the battery installed the carb...started right up but had a rough idle so I had a fresh tuneup pack in the garage it had points, condenser and rotor prepackaged,my boat shop said oh you don't need a new cap as they don't go bad. It's a 1988 OMC 4.3L Book says to set points at .019 and the dwell to 37-41. I set points to 19 and the dwell is 25 so I re-adjust to .016 dwell goes to 39. before I could hit the key and started right up, now ....it cranks and cranks then starts.
1. Do the points sound right at .016?
2. now is it the carb giving me problems or the points?
3. cap?
4. what electronic ignition conversion does everyone like?

thanks

Re: OMC tune up help

I'm thinking its from the key being left on and the points condensor or bad cap being the problem .Why is the points being set at 16 and not 19 to get the correct dwell?

Re: OMC tune up help

Check the voltage to the coil while cranking. It should be close to batt. volts. If not check slave solenoid.

Yeah, make sure you have 12.5 volts from battery to coil.

I assume that you went through the carb??? if thats the case, the carb will need to fine tuned before the engine will start and idle normal....I am a firm believer in the electronic ignition conversion kits...throw the points away...you will start better and idle better.

Re: OMC tune up help

Hey guys thank you for your reply's.. she is up and running fine now. rolled it out this morning and fired right up, no long cranking nothing. maybe after the refresh on the carb it had nozzle drip or something..anyway she runs smooth (for a v-6) at idle and is responsive to the throttle. I'm still interested in changing to electronic conversion and would be interested in hearing which brand is preferred. thank again
