How do i get the coupler out on a 1984 OMC v-6 upper drive unit I got part out pictured below. Other part it goes into is lightly damaged also. new water pump shaft would probably work but prefer to replace both parts at once. manual says it should pull straight out but wont budge?

Stick a bent piece of steel or use a slapper we call it here in the north. It's a dent puller a weight that you pull back on a steel rod with a stopper on the end.

You did try a adjustable pliers? It has to come out the bearing carrier and all.

Than you will be able to see the gears.

Is it the impeller housing you can't get off? (Part #29 in the other thread)Mine was stuck to the gear housing (#51) and I ended up using a plastic mallet and carefully tapping around around the edge to work it free. The gear housing came out with a little wiggling. Just be patient and persistant.

I am doing the same thing as we speak. The way I got mine out was to use a light hammer and a center punch. I used the hammer to rotate the housing until there was a clear spot for me to take my slide hammer with a u shaped hook mounted on the end. I then slide the hook portion of the dent puller over the area that get exposed and lightly worked it out. Trust me as you rotate the housing you will see what I am talking about. It really worked like a champ. I have mine apart to do the upper gears this time around. Got to love the omc stringer baby. but all kidding asid they area great drive.

Don't forget when you put it all togather to pack the splines with lot's of grease. If you have any more questions just give a yell. You can rent the type of tool I am talking about from auto zone or most auto part's store ask for a 5 pound dent puller with attachment's. Good luck JP

what are you hooking the bent piece of steel around? I tried putting air pressure on it to blow it out but still would not move. I got all pieces to water pump out, i'm trying to get the bearing housing assembly out. I have not removed the ball gear assebly or anything else.

The housing asy will turn if you tap it around inside the upper case, like counter clock wise. Then you will see after you turn the housing inside the upper drive that there will be a place you can hook some thing on to but first you must spin the housing in the upper drive case maybee a inch or so at a time until you see what I am talking about.
