I have a pair of 1988 1.6L OMC V4s. This afternoon I started both with the muffs to run some gas through the carbs as they had not been run in several months. After starting the stwbd engine I felt the water stream coming out of the pi##er and it was much hotter than usual. I got my infa red heat gun and took a reading. The stwbd bank read around 190 degrees and the port around 135. This points to a stuck thermostat I think. I started the port engine and had somewhat the same result - 165 on the stwbd and 130 on the port. Again I assume this is a stuck thermostat. Could you confirm my assumption?
Oh - I replaced the water pumps and all the guts of the thermostats about 3 years ago and have not used the boat much since.
This resulted in several questions:
1. Is it "normal" for the stwbd bank to run hotter than the port?
2. I know that the "normal" operating temp for this engine is around 140 degrees but at what temp do the thermostats open?
3. Not related to the above problem - Lets say I am out in the water and cruising just above plane and my temp horns go off. If I go to WOT will the water flow through the popits be enough to cool the engine if the thermostats are not opening properly?
