I recently purchased a 1987 Vip 16 or 17 foot boat. It has a Ford 1.3 or 1.5 with a Holley 300 carb on it. When you engage the drive wile in the water the engine stalls. With the trim out of the water the drive will not stall the engine. If I trim the drive into the water with it reved at 3500-4000 it pulls my engine down to almost stalling but starts to pull rpms up very slowly. I thought it was the carb so I replaced it with a new one. Same issues I am new to boats so any ideas to a solution are welcome.

You probably talking about OMC 2.3 cobra setup. It had a 2.3 ford engine. It seems that the issue you have is caused by ESA not operating properly or shift cable sticking. I personally would get a manual and remove / inspect the outdrive, readjust / replace shift cable...

If you search this forum there is plenty of info on testing the ESA module as well as shift cable replacement...

Thanks for your post esa will only affect it in gear right? It will try to stall out just revving the throttle out of gear if im Idling and give it 1/2 to 3/4 throttle
