OMC/Volvo swap

Is the cutout in a 1988 Bayliner capri OMC outdrive and a 1984 Bayliner capri Volvo penta outdrive the same? I'm thinking about swaping the hole engine,gimble and outdrive from the 1984 volvo penta and putting it in the 1986 OMC.thanks

Your OMC Cobra 1988 (or possibly 1987) is the same cutout as a Mercruiser (and mid to late 90's Volvo SX)

If I'm not mistaken, an early 80's Volvo Penta transom mount is MUCH bigger and a very different transom cutout.

So i can just make a template of the cutout on the volvo 4 Cyc. gimble and trace it on the OMC hull ..Cut it out and install the volvo gimble?

That might work just fine.

You really should get your hands on an installation manual to get the dimensions and layout of where the transom mount should go.

I have never had my hands on an older Volvo engine/drive.

There are a few people on this site that have probably installed a few Volvos of that vintage. (Someone may even have a template for that installation too!)

From looking @ pictures it looks like the volvo penta cut out is bigger..BUT thats looking @ pictures. I think this will work..Please if anybody has done this before help me.Also if you know where to find a volvo and omc template for cut out let me know. thanks
