heres two questions

1, can the lower unit leak water in it if the impeller was changed and no sealer was put in the bolts?
2,if the engine overheated, and the bellows got to hot,can this cause water in the lower unit also?

just a thought...it's a cobra

jch,
1,no.we use sealer so the bolts will be easier to remove next time.
2,no.
I suspect you have a bad seal in the gearcase.Pull it (the drive) off, presurize it and submerge it in h2o.Hopefully you'll see which seal is bad.Use to just tear them down for a complete reseal, but with today's costs, and cobra getting hard to get parts for,I suggest the shortest route.

DHP

Check the ujoint bellows for water, if it leaks, there is nothing left to keep water out of the drive.
Also when pressure testing the drive, if you don't have anything big enough to submerge the drive in, just get a spray bottle and put a little dishwashing liquid in the water and spay the drive. Even a minor leak will blow bubbles.
