OMC water pump shaft issues

You helped us restore a 1975 23’ Fiberform through some good advise and great products. The boat “Freebie” has held up great until we spun out the water pump shaft on our electric shift OMC outdrive. Or what we think is the water pump shaft.

Hears where our question comes in, we lost all drive while trying to plane on Lake Shasta. We came to this conclusion because we have no forward or reverse and the engine seems to get hot. Our question is that the shaft seens to appear in the repair guides to be smaller than the upper drive shaft, and we were wondering if you knew if the water pump shaft could spin out without damaging the upper drive splines? The repair for just the water pump shaft would be reasonable and easier to repair.

What this whole experience has done (for better or worse? Unkown) is created is an extreme desire for boating with our whole family and we are considering doing something similar on a larger scale. We were looking for smaller size sundeck cabin cruisers around $7000+ so we don’t have to leave the water for the night and do some boat camping. We found Bayliner 2455, 2650,2755 type boats around 1989 in fair to good condition. We then stumbled across a 1997 Bayliner 26’ Sundeck type cruiser at a very very reasonable price that seem to find herself under saltwater, over the dash for about 5 days. The claim is that the gauges and wiring would need to be replaced. I would image that the engine may need some repairs while the outdrive, which seems to prefer to be submerged, would fair OK. The Main Question is how would you think the hull, fiberglass, structure would hold up if this 5 day swim was truly all the time that she spent under. I understand these questions maybe better answered after knowing what was done to the components of this vessel after it saw the surface or dry land again. I find that I enjoy doing the restoration and consider my work Tough & Styley– even commonly described as overkill, but I do not want to be punished by an un-completable project that would never be SHIPSHAPE or more trouble then anyone could imagine. Cosmetic repairs to interiors would also be necessary but the price – oh so good.

So, Don’t do it ?? – No way Jose’ ??, you must be crazy ??

Again thanks for all the prior advice on our previous project and I am looking forward to hearing from you on this next possible nightmare.

Pros and Cons ?? Anyone?

Curiously, Capt. Bert

Re: OMC water pump shaft issues

When the water pump shaft spline strip out you need to replace both shafts. at least on the 1980 stringer model.
