OMC Woes.... Locked Up?***UPDATE 6/10/08***

I just purchased a 25' Bayliner. I don't know much about OMC's so here we go.

Ran and drove just fine, however, when I went to move it to a slip, it started missing badly when put into gear. Runs perfect in neutral with good throttle response. I was able to make it back to the weekend docks.

One of the marina guys went to move it for me and tried "slamming" it in gear with the throttle up a bit to keep it from stalling. I suggested he not do that. On his second try it slammed and died, now it's locked up and won't turn over.

After some research, I found out about the shift module and associated switches etc that I believe to be the problem with the severe miss.

Any ideas on what may have happened to the drive to lock it up? I know my way around a Merc but this is my first OMC.

Sounds like the upper gears let go.. you cant jam it into gear like that,, all that was needed was a new lower shift cable or adjustment, now its history,, sorry..

I would be telling "the marina guy" that he f'ed up my boat and ask him how he is going to take care of the repairs of the damage he did.

Yeah, it's not sounding good. The marina guy is a tricky situation, plus we keep our good boat there and he's the racker guy.

I think I could still sell it for at least what I got it for.

omc cobras are notorious for tough shifting. the esa module is most likely what was bogging the engine down, that is what it's supposed to do. a switch on the shifter activates the Esa module and it interupts the negetive side of the coil, slowing down the engine RPM's enough to shift fow/rev easily. if the shifter cables are not adjusted correctly, shifting is difficult b/c the esa module is not engaging to slow the rpms. I've not heard of gears locking up even is the engine was at 1200 rpms when your marine guy thru it into gear. I think the shift rod in the outdrive is seizing up. A suggestion, lift the outdrive all the way up,take the front anode off the outdrive. You will see a 3/8 dia. shifting rod. spay some wd40 and have someone work the shifter back and forth. Do this with the engine off by the way. when you can spin the prop freely, you've disengaged the lower gear case.

Awesome luck, talked to the marina owner last night, had his OMC guy look at it today. Turns out when it stalled, it started dieseling and running backwards and sucked some water into a few of the cylinders.

They changed the plugs, points, oil, and repaired the ESA. Runs as good as day one.

That worked out well.

Wow, rare for a business to do the right thing now a days... I wonder if somebody attached to the marina is on this site and saw your post????

Anyway, I am glad they did the right thing. Somebody was smart enough to realize some good will was more important the a few hours of lost labor.

I doubt that, in the big scheme of things, most places want to do right, and when they do, you seldom hear about it.

You hit that nail on the head. If I had to write about every car I bought or everytime my car was repaired satisfactory, I'd be a busy man.

Great to hear about.
I think most honorable people and businesses would do just the same. As has already been stated you rarely hear about the good or expected and often/always hear about the bad.
