Re: omc

I have the infamous OMC 800 series outdrive in which I just rebuilt last winter.

You issues sounds as if the "shift cable" is jamming up. Follow your shift wire to the unit usually located near the motor (just prior to going out on a cable to the motor).
Start there. I've never found the actual shifter to be faultly but regardless look there as well.
These 2 places are the least expensive areas to check first.

If all that proves good, the the problem most likely is in the botton end of the outdrive.

20.jpgIf you have the drive with the cone clutches,it's the best one there is.I wouldn't change it.It's the same as the Volvo or Bravo's
The shift mech can get corroded and stick. The cable can corrode and not work right.
#21/42 is called the bellcrank, it and the rest of the mech can get sticky.
On the motor is a shift assist, check it out, it might be bad.J

I have a similar problem. My 1985 Stingray Seaswirl 3.0 omc outdrive will not go in reverse. Though when I have it on ramps and out of the water with outboard down it works perfectly?
However;when I have it in the water that the problem occurs. The gears sound like they want to engage, but they won't. I took the outdrive hosing apart 6 times and made many adjustments, but still the same thing.

If you have the King Cobra drive with the cone clutch, you have serious problems. It is not the same as the Volvo SX drive, and there are few parts available for those drives, and even less techs with the tools to repair them.

Sokey,

You might want to check out "TC Marine". they work on OMC and will ship world wide.
They did my lower end last fall and it's been great.
They have a website: www.sterndrive.info
At the very least, check them out. They have a ton of good used parts as well as some original OMC parts.
Good Luck!

Yeah. If it's 90 cone-clutch drive, it makes it the interim OMC cone-clutch drive. ( also making it the "worst-one")

Your best bet is if it has major problems, is to replace it with a donor Mercruiser or Volvo setup.

Howdy, your problem is not related in any way to the original posters problem. You should start your own new thread describing your problem.
