ok heres where im at. i was going to replace the floors in a 77 baja tri16. so i set in to cut the glass and the sole out and i cut to deep i have cut three hole in the hull. one is about 13 inches the second about 4 inches and the thrid is about 2. so then i decided in my brilliance and glory to be Oopps, so now i have the cap off. the float foam is not soaked but will have to come out to replace the stringers. i'm now thinking about moving in nesto oopps rob j or someone smarter than me. So my next thing is to order the glass and resin to repair the hull and to glass the PT because marine ply is not in the budget for my area{ North East Arkansas}. the stringers are original i think(but not very well) anyway, they are dimintional lumber 1X6 so i'm concidering 5/4 x 6 composite deck lumber. if anyone has any suggestions please send away. will post pics tonight or maybe tomorrow.

Now you post some pics and fix that puppy. We have all seen holes in the hull.Sand back on inside and v it out then build up overlapping each time as you go about 3 layers. It will be like new.By the way clean the bottom and place wax paper there and tape it up well .Itll almost smooth its self out.

That 5/4 composite decking is great stuff for decks, but it is not nearly as still as wood and should not be used for anything structural

Re: OMG now what

Ok heres an update i finally got a day with no rain or not much anyway, so i gotthe motor and cap off the baja. This wasn't an easy task, since some one had takin it off before i think it was "glued" on with some clear silicone type sealer and the cap was glassed to the hullat the nose but it looked like a mud dobber "thread tail wasp" had done it. So out came the recip saw and no more problem. Ok now this is where i have to ask a question. what i'm think is to add extra floatation foam in the corners of port and aft of the transome to help with the extra weight of the outboard, it is rated for a 115 and was bought with a 140 on it. so i was concidering 2lb foam but outside the bilge area and the glass will keep it dry right?? i have been also concidering the 5/4 composite decking to the stringers. these are things i'd like to have input on before i get to this point.

Use the 1 X 6 or whatever you called out in real wood. It will save weight and will be more structural and the fiberglass can bond to it. You will not bond well to the plastic decking. I am an expert in plastics and a pretty good amateur in composite construction (kevlar/carbon/e-glass/s-glass/epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester resins). Trust me. Use the wood and properly glass it in. Adding the extra foam where you can makes great safety sense to me and something I will be doing in my project too.

thanks wanttofly. theres a little story behind that, my wife and i decided a few years ago to get my dad that mailbox we looked hi and low but couldn't find one. after searching and searching we Fianlly located that box in a subburb of St Louis but they would ship it to us, so we made plans to go get it 400 miles away. but suffices to say he loved it, and got to enjoy it for 5 years before he passed away in jan last year.

Re: OMG now what

well yesterday was a good day on the baja. i got the rest of the floor cut out" looking like ooppss a loompa in my tyvek" and took measurements on the side boxes to be rebuilt. Next is to grind down the entire inside hull for a full glass overlay, and repair the three holes i cut "pics to come of those" while removing the first part of the deck. after the over lay then its to the stringers and cross braces. i dirll a hole into the four corners of the transome to check its integerity and is like new so i'll reseal those with ooppss super dooper peanut butter {pat pending} then its on to the grinding. But today is mothers day and my birthday so now work today. I am hitting the big 40 and looking forward to being a 40 year old with a with a new baja tri16 LOL....
