hello..my wife just bought me a motorguide maxi 26 two bank on board charger for my trolling batteries. i have one cranking battery with a separate on board trickle charger for it.i have two 12 volt trolling batteries wired in series to run my 24 volt trolling motor.my question is do i have to remove the jumper wire between the 2 trolling batteries before charging them or can i charge them in series. also im thinking about adding an isolator to charge the trolling batteries as im running. can you give me some pros and cons. thanks in advance ....john50

Try reading the directions with the charger.

I've seen many isolaters get hot and catch on fire. I would think twice about that one.

Boat Parts

John50

If you put a switch inline between the batteries you can charge them separatly, just open switch when charging and close when trolling. Buddy has a charger that will charge in series and he was not happy with it, so put a switch between the batteries and charges them separtely. He says he gets a better charge on the batteries this way.

hey rickrick..one other question. i put the switch between the batteries to isolate them. now after i charge them and close the switch will it harm the charger when leaving the leads connected to the batteries.

Re: on board battery charger wiring

John50, If you have wired a harness to charge the two batteries in parallel, it would be prudent to remove the harness prior to hooking up the series connection to get 24 volts. I think you might have a bad problem with the charging harness or charger giving you cross or
ciruit shorts through the charger. Check for smoke the first time you charge the batteries and then hook them up in series. No smoke, all
ok... smoke, shut them down fast... good luck...
