Morning all

I pulled the drive on my 76 Merc 165 for the 30th or so time and found the large crush ring sliced in two places which never happened before. Obviously it got disturbed on last install I assume by the u-joints which I am concerned that it does not happen again.

I have always put the ring in the bellhousing then slid the drive on. Is it workable to put the ring on the drive then slide drive on thus no chance for u-joints to disturb its location?

Or any other tips would help, this required gimbal & u-joints due to water intrusion.

Thanks

Re: On drive or in bellhousing

i use some kinda glue on the seal to be sure it stays in place on the bell housing. bellows glue?

i hear ya about wondering if it stays in place with no way to find out till the next time ya pull the drive. short of water intrusion if bad enough to notice from inside the boat...

how's your ft. seal on the drive? water intrusion into the bellows area also can intrude the drive. the ft. seal keeps lub in, but don't keep water out.

this is what happens to the drive gear yoke from water intrusion into the bellows.

ya get the rusty's right at the point where the ft. seal rides at. eventually ruining the seal.
water intrusion into the drive lub is a sign of failure, a pressure test may find a leak there. however in my case. my drive did pass a pressure test prior to going after that seal and yoke. i had to go physically look. i also didn't have water inturision into the drive lub. both got replaced. i felt like i caught a failure waiting to happen..

Glue the seal in place. I just use bellows adheisive since it's usually handy.

EDIT: This is assuming you are talking about seal a in the picture below.

Don,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, item (a.) in your illustration.

So glue the seal in the bellhousing is the way I will go.
