On Iboats engine finder help why does it skip years?

In the find out what year mercury you got by serial#,why does it skip years.I.E It goes from 1986 to 1989 with no serial # for the years in between.Did they not make that type motor during those years?

I think its because the serial #'s go up through to the new year that shows.I think this right anyway just want to clear it up,thanks.
