Anyone know of an on line chart plotter like a map quest type deal to plan trips from your home PC?

You can download charts, get your way points ect..but unless you have a plotter on board how do you plan to utilize the data?

having one without the other's useless.

I have a Garmin 215 GPS/Plotter on my boat. I am looking to plan a trip from NY to southern MD and would like to look some info up on line to get an idea of travel time and fuel consumption.

... although I haven't really fooled with it's chart plotting capabilities yet as it and the boat is new to me.

My chartplotter uses Navionics, and they make software called Navplanner for this very thing. I am thinking of getting it.

Gotcha...go to http://www.marinewaypoints.com/learn/charts/AtlanticCoast.shtml

There's your charts...as for plotting distance, route ect..take the waypoints you want then input them into your garmin..it should give you overall stats, if not ..you'll have to do it the old fashioned way..Using a ruler & legend to get distance, best routes can be determined by water depth and shortest distance between points depending on mean water depths.

Sounds like a fun trip! Are you coming through the C&D canal and down the Chesapeake by chance?

Yeah it looks that way. This will be my first time out of LI sound. May be making a deal with trading my Thompson for an Egg Harbor! (fingers crossed!) He is in Ft. Washington and I am on the North shore LI sound. I may just have my boat hauled across LI to take the 6 plus hour trip around the Island off. Still figuring out all the details. Figuring on a 6-7 day trip though. (don't want to think of the fuel consumption !!)

Awesome! Maybe some of us Upper Chesapeake guys can run a small part of the way and grab a bite or something when you come through.

I am one of those "Upper Chesapeake guys" and would love to meet up with more people and make a short run like that. :D All depends on when you come through. If my schedule allows, I would be very interested in doing it.

Any idea on when you are thinking about making the trip?

Good luck with the planning!

Re: On Line Chartplotter??

I am going to be flying into BWI early next week if all goes to plan. Then the other boat owner will accompany me back to NY later that night to inspect my boat. We will know at that point if we have a green light. We are both looking to do this sometime in early August to have some of the season left on our what hopes to be, new boats. I will post updates. If I find we are going to do it I can always start a new thread for the run to get more people involved. :)

It is the bomb, it has the charts on a layer, it is what you ask for I think and then some.

If only it had an option to click on your route and have it automatically calculate time, distance and fuel consumption! No that would be CRAZZZYYYY!!!!! :D :D :D

Re: On Line Chartplotter??

Hey guys. All is going well with the plans. I am anticipating making the transaction and cruising from Ft. Washington MD down to Cape May possibly Thursday August 6th. Then Friday the 7th cruise up to Atlantic City, NJ and ending the final leg at my port of Mt. Sinai Harbor, NY on Saturday the 8th. This is dependent on if all the planets align and the moon is full and if Neptune is looking out for us!! :)

... however if the above does not work and we are still going through with the deal it will be more like August 20, 21 and 22 as I am headed to CA for vacation August 12 - 18.

Re: On Line Chartplotter??

Since you have a Garmin Chart plotter/GPS system All you really have to do is buy the area that you want to travel through. Not the cartridge but the CD.
Load the CD into your computer and download the area that you want. Now plan everything you want on your computer and once you are done, take the cartridge from your plotter and with the help of a little gizmo that you stick your cartridge in it will down load the area and all the additional info straight from your computer into your cartridge.
You can call the garmin people. They are very helpful and they will explain better than I just did
Good luck.
