All the things I've been told about ONBOARD CHARGERS has been more negitive than pos, does anyboby know the real deal??
It seems to me that the concept of using one's motor to charge your trolling motor battery is a good one.
Please-- help me make the right decision

Re: onboard chargering system

I wouldn't.......the charging system in most outboards is too fragile and is designed to look after a battery used only for starts.
Time is a factor too. If you use the troller batteries for 2 hours at 30 amps = 60 amp/hours. It will take a 10 amp charging system 6 hours of max RPM running to recharge battery. Thats in ideal conditions where the start battery has been isolated!!

Bottom line is:
>troller battery will never get fully charged and will suffer reduced life
>outboard charging system will crack under the pressure of a maximum long term load and cost you rectifiers
> a small charger plugged in on shore will charge the battery fully over time and spare you O/B system.....

Disregard everything here if its an external alternator system on an inboard.....
