Ok the 66 evinrude 40 hp that I got runing in a pail with no load in netural. once you rev it up say 1/2 way and go back to what should be idle it stays reved for a bit and slowly comes back down is this normal someone said it could be due to no load.

it seems that once you reach a certian point in the rpm it does this. I was thinking it might be sucking air. if that is true then why not a issue all the time at any rpm

Is the mag plate rotating freely and not binding?

Whoa there!! In the first place why are you revving it up half way in a bucket? You are an intelligent person and came here to ask an honest question, so I won't suggest that was a dumb thing to do.

OK, now that you agree to stop doing that, I'll explain. The 40hp motors are extremely prone to a condition called "runaway". That occurs when you rev it up in neutral, or any other time it happens to be revving with no load, such as a lost prop. Once it starts to run away, sometimes it won't want to slow down at all. In fact, it is such a normal thing, that OMC put a special switch on the motor for that very purpose. It is called a vacuum cut-out switch. It senses a run-away condition and cuts out one cylinder till it slows back down to a normal idle.

It sounds like your motor is acting completely normal, and doesn't need any fixing. Just stop teasing it.

well that answers a bunch of stuff now I just hooked up the cut out switch once again

the reving up was like a quick there and back (just a snap) mostly because this motor is all new to me and to true pond/lake test is at least 1/2hr away and I'm still finding issues this was one.

I will get the switch hooked back up and hope it goes away

thanks for the reply
