I just bought a 2000 70hp Johnson outboard motor..... well the misfortune of the original owner.....( The oil injection system FAILED )
he did not want to spend the Bucks to repair it....so I bought it....

I plan on taken it apart just as soon as I build a MOTOR STAND.
I plan on taken many pictures and purchasing a manual.
if anyone has some advice.. please educate me.... I had been a Vehicle Mechanic for over 20 yrs and owned my own shop for 6.... so I have the tools
and the now how... just need some guidance.
so back to the motor...
I know by turning the flywheel one way and then back to the other way
that we HAVE internal PROBLEMS. I can turn the motor until it actually STOPS by its self. so prolly a ROD I just have hopes that its not to bad...
So are there anything that I need to be aware of before tearing into this REBUILD ?????

couple of things. First make sure you buy a factory oem manual for your motor. Cars are not the same as outboards there are alot of things that might make sense in the automotive world that dont have any business being around an outboard. A factory manual will help you more thasn you know. Id make sure I found out what caused this motor to fail. Oil injection could be it but there might have been carb issues or over heating. So if this motor is rebuildable then make sure you redo the entire thing.
GOOD LUCK!

another thought. I rebuilt a mercury 60hp classic one time and learned a neat trick. Remove all of the electrical compnents as one unit meaning dont un hook any wires you done have to it makes it alot easier putting them back on. It works I have rebuilt about 20 different motors since then and done it to all of them and it works great,

I don't know....I've been working on outboards for 18 years and cars for 30. Outboards are simpler and easier on your back. Just clamp it and you don't have to crawl around it. Teammuir1, I have no doubts that you'll be able to get this job done and do a good job at that. ;)

Lots of the forum users (and others) buy parts from Iboats.com I've never heard anything against them on the forum (which the provide at no cost to us). Best of luck with your project. Rick.

remove the cylinder head, bet you will find a disintergrated piston, with chunks in the cylinder, not allowing the rotation of the flywheel.

Re: One man bad luck is another mans treasure !!!

There is another thread on this forum about a rebuild on a 70 hp johnson....
I followed it and learned alot... I really liked the fact the person posted
pictures....as he completed the rebuild.
I will be doing the very same thing....with the motor and with my boat.
I will be very busy this winter....thas for sure... lol.
I am hoping that my Crank is not harmed... and the cylinder walls are
not badly scared. You just never know until you get inside......
Are there any specialty tools that I will need.....????
( BOAT MOTOR TOOLS ) lol

Re: One man bad luck is another mans treasure !!!

I would prefer a manual that only deals with the motor I have...
a specific manual for my specific Motor....

IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Go to www.outboardbooks.com/ ; this is the Ken Cook company which sells the oem repair manual and the parts list for your exact motor. They are "pricey" but you will save time and money in the long run.

Good luck on the rebuild.

I will check those cats out.... thanks.....
I am wondering is it possible that someone has these books
for Down Load ???? how cool would that be to be able to DL
the book PDF file... style..... just a thought.....
maybe that was a premature thought it might be better to actually
have the manual in hand..... ( BRAIN FART ) lol:(

I have brain farts on occasion my self. The actual manual from evinrude/johnson is allot better than the downloadables as far as I am concerned. Pdfs are a pain in the behind to find what page you want then have to copy it to take it to the shop. Books are best. Just my 2 cents.

Re: One man bad luck is another mans treasure !!!

Well let me tell you why I thought of it that way......
being a mechanic for as long as I had been..... I have access to
ALLDATA.... thats a company that has all manuals on hand and you look it
up online..... of course it costs... but in a pinch like I had been in the past
it had saved me a few times.. with problems... so thats were I came up
with the idea.... I used something simular.... any ways...
I AM WITH YOU ON THIS ONE.....
I think I better have the book in hand.. at the time.... so I will be
ordering myself one this week.....
I am ready to get started in the teardown...... I will be taking MANY digital
Pictures..... and I have done build threads before ... just not on an outboard motor.. I fly Radio Control Planes.. I have my own Website dedicated to them and now my new love of Boating... lol....

Dont count your chickens before the eggs hatch!!!!!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha

how much did you pay for this project motor???

the old wives tale seems to be this abused statement:
