One more question??

Sorry I forgot to ask something in my other two posts. I am pulling out this 4.3 because the geniue previous owner took the heads off to "check things out" and then let it get rained in. Needless to say i have a 6 cylinder rusty paperweight now! So I have ready access to a half dozen GM automotive 4.3 engines from my being in the auto mechanic business. Now I figure I can re-fresh one of those, use marine gaskets (are there any difference) and then use brass freeze plugs and a towing/RV cam, and of course build to bottom end carefully so it will stand up to a load. Then i should be ok. Like I am going to use automotive rings, bearings, pistons, crank, etc. cause the stuff is like half the price as the same stuff for "marine" applications. Should i be ok like that?

Re: One more question??

How about the rotation, mine is an original engine in a 1990 Sea Ray boat. Its a merc 4.3. Is the rotation the same as an auto engine?

Rings, bearings are the same as well as rotation. You have it pretty much under control. Some years used stainless steel head gaskets. If you dont run it in saltwater you should be good to go their also. Distributor, fuel pump, starter, alternator, waterpump and carb are all marine and must be due to safty.

The 4.3 v6 that comes in the astro van and s-10 trucks that has a factorey roller cam/ lifter setup in it, i have heard that you can use that in a marine application without noticiing the difference (ie not have to spend$$$$ on a marine cam if it ain't gonna make that big of a differecce)

Re: One more question??

marine cams have a shorter valve overlap then automotive cams do, to prevent water from being sucked back into motor. a stock automotive cam probabaly won,t cause a big problem but high performance automotive cams, stay away from in marine cams. Most cam manufactors, Crane, Comp., and others all offer marine cams.
