Finally took care of a longstanding and frustrating stalling problem with my 1972 140 hp mercruiser in a 72 Starcraft Holiday . Engine would always start fine but would stall out and be very difficult to restart after 30-90 min of run time .Some here thought it might be an overheating coil some were equal adamant it's " never the coil ".Anyway , replaced the original coil with a Pertronic Flamethrower 3 ohm coil . Following Pertronics instructions to see if my boat has an external resistor I got a 6.6 V read off the new coil ( and 3.4 V off the old one ) therefore according to them I have a resistor wire somewhere but can"t find it . Some diagrams show it as a Purple wire from coil to carb but I have no such thing . While searching for resistance wire I found a white wire from the ignition switch to the oil pressure gauge with about half of its insulation gone . I think that was probably the source of stalling issue ( and maybe the coil? ) So with new white wire and coil it runs fins ,but I'm still curious about the resistance wire . The Tech at Pertronics said my rig doesn't need a resistance wire and if I run the new coil with it it won't run as well (whatever that means ) . Anyway so far it runs fine but still wondering about the mysterious resistance wire . Sorry for the long story ( and I can't even Type).
