One of two cylinders firing

I just found out that the 55hp ?76 Johnson(55EL76) i?ve been working on only fires on the lower cylinder. I just replaced the top, #1 coil and am thinking that it is the power pack. When I had the engine running I pulled the plug wire off the #1 cylinder spark plug and nothing changed and I didn?t get shocked. Pulling the plug wire off the lower cylinder plug stalled the engine and gave me a jolt. Is there anything else that could cause this problem besides the power pack? I really don?t have much more money to spend on this thing right now.

Try cleaning the grounds, and swapping plug wires.

Work hard to try and isolate the problem to the backside of the power pack (coils, wires, etc.).
Power packs are spendy.

My #1 coil wire reaches the #2 plug but not vice versa. I switched it up to only fire the #2 cylinder and it ran like it has been. Then I switched it the wires back to the way they are supposed to be on the power pack and plugs and it ran the same. Could it even be the stator giving me problems? All of the electrical parts are original besides the starter switch and the #1 coil. And what does the power pack even do?

The power pack reads the pulses (and takes charge) off the stator and fires the coils at the appropriate time.

So, I'm confused now at what's been done.

Did you put #1's plug wire on #2 coil and plug and it ran okay? Or did something else happen?

All that has been done is that I set it up to test the new coil that I have set as the #1 coil, but firing on the #2 cylinder. And it ran like it has been. The lowest priced power pack that I've found so far is here in iboats at $77. A place by my house sells them for $133. And another one I have found was $90. Do you know of a place that would sell them for cheaper?
