I Have A 1971 2 Cylinder Evinrude 40 Hp.....
Was In Terrible Shape When I Bought It.......but Good Compression
120 Lbs Dry And Cold
No Spark The Prev. Owner Said His Father Tried To
Put In A New Ignition Switch And Burned Up A Majority Of The Wires
To Motor And In Magneto Too.....anyway... I Replaced Wires And
Coils, Points And Condenser All New Parts......
Top Cylinder Will Spark Bottom Will Not.........amy Ideas
I Have Pulled The Flywheel So Much I See The Magneto In My Sleep

Re: One Of Two Sparks

if you use the sierra coils that you have to put the wires together, make sure the pin in the coil is in the center of the wire, also on the boot end , i always strip back the wire, and wrap around the attachment piece, before i put the boot on. are you coils edges lined up the boss, on the timing plate.

also each coil has a ground,(kill wire) make sure it is not shorting on to something.

Did you replace the condensors? Bad ones keep spark from happening too.

Re: One Of Two Sparks

yes all new coils, points, condensers
i think the coils are shorted out internally.....
an ohm meter registers 1.0 between the two wires oneto ground and one to poits...... should there be a direct closed circuit from one coil wire to the other, if i hook a battery operated test lite between the two wires the lite comes on so when i hook ground wire to ground then both sides of the points are grounded,,,,,every contact one the magneto test positive with the test light, i truely do not understand how these magnetos work.... both sides of the points test with light when points are opened of closed....is this
correct i am so lost

Whoa, there. You lost me. Here's how it is supposed to be:

1: You need an ohmmeter that is capable of reading less than one ohm. Most digital ones can do that, most cheap analog ones can't.

2. For the following tests, have the coils installed and everything hooked up.

3. Connect one meter lead to the armature plate and the other one to the points where the coil and condenser are attached. Meter should read zero resistance with the points closed and about an ohm or less with points open. If you can't get the zero reading, the points are not making contact.

4. Leave the one meter lead connected to the armature plate and connect the other to the terminal inside the spark plug boot. Resistance should be several k-ohms. If very high or infinity, you do not have contact where the wire pokes into the coil, or where the boot terminal pierces it. OR, the coil is bad..unlikely with two new coils. You ARE using "wire" wires, aren't you?

Repeat with other set of coil/points/wire. They are not interconnected, or at least shouldn't be. Except for common ground that is.

One last thought: You got that incorrect switch out of there, didn't you? A magneto ignition uses a special switch. Also, the switch has to be turned on when making the above tests.

Re: One Of Two Sparks

thanks i'll try that....
one thought the two coil wires... not the primary going to sparkplug
but the other two
when a continuity tester is connected it registers positive from one wire
to the other is this normal.............
my old coils one showed continuity and one did not....
they were burned pretty bad........so i don't know
i am electrically inept........duh

Re: One Of Two Sparks

about the switch....... how do i know what is correct switch.......
the one i have has 5 plugs on the back
i am not using the switch for testing the two wires that connect to the
"M" position are not hooked up to anything right now i am using a bat.
and cables to bypass the switch and solenoid... is that a problem????
and the switch is in the on position even though it is not hooked to
the magneto... i do not currently have a working starter solenoid
