What are the pros and cons of 1 piece vs 2 piece props.

I'm looking to pick up a solas 4 blade prop and trying to decide between the amita and rubex props. This is for my tahoe deckboat with 4.3 TKS mercruiser. I'm not sure whether my current prop has a seperate hub or not. Also, will the existing prop nut / washer work on the new solas prop or do i need to get a new one/type?

Thanks,

Re: one piece vs two piece prop

I am new to boating myself and will be replacing my prop soon, I was going to get a solas rubex (over the amita) simply because of two piece unit. The way I was looking at, if I was to have a prop strike and bend a blade I could simply order the prop by itself, reuse the hub and save some cash, and it would almost be the same price of having a shop fix a bent prop (figuring a standard 3blade alum prop). Unless there is some facts that im missing (hopefully someone who knows will chime in)I will be making the switch shortly to a solas rubex.

Re: one piece vs two piece prop

both hubs in theory should give with a prop strike.meaning you will have to replace the prop or repair and replace the hub.the hubs are designed to give not to save your prop but to save your lowerunit.ive been at my buddys prop shop lots and the 2 piece prop/hubs (xhs)seem to be a little better in the lower saving department in my very limited exposure to them.my buddy tends to agree on this observation, and seems to be seeing slightly less lowerunit damage from prop hits particuarlly with s/s props.what i like about the xhs is you can have one hub and 10 props if you so chose saving a bit on prop/hub combos.i got my s/s apollo with the xhs type hub.
