I was wanting to know if anybody knows where I can find online manuals for OMC stern drives? Particularly a 1988 5.0L. I have a paper one on the way but it has already been 10 days and I need one now. Thanks for the help.

Re: online manuals

I don't think there is an 'online' manual for OMC.

Hey KEP, I have a 1988 4.3 ltr omc. Do you have the king cobra 5.0L. I have a manual which covers your boat, I think. What is your imediate problem? The people of this forum are great. I learn so much just from reading others post of the same problems I encounter.

DonWon I have a 5.0Litre OMC but I don't think that it is a King Cobra, just a cobra. Do you know a way that I can tell the difference? Thanks, Kep

Re: online manuals

I don't know at what size engine was the king cobra. I have seen pics of the king and there was a cover over the flame arrestor that said King Cobra. I can look at my owners manual or service book and figure out what size engine is the king cobra, it seems that is was like 7L V8. Mine is a V6. I just rebuilt my carb, which was the first carb I ever rebuilt, but I did it and it runs good in the driveway, I will take it out this weekend. It was running bad, wouldn't even plane. Per suggestions from here I decided to do the rebuild. I found the bolts holding the carb to intake were not tight and maybe just tightening them would have solved my problem but I had already bought the kit. Do you know that OMC is out of business? I worry about the ability to get parts in the future and my local marine shop doesn't even have an I/O mechanic. When ever I contact someone about parts they sigh when I tell the it's an OMC. There has been alot of issues regarding the gears in the lower unit and the shift cable. There was a recall on the shift cable and some gears in the lower unit. I got the new cable which is red but I don't know about the gears. When I first go into forward I hear a thud like the dog slips before completely meshing, it's better if I throttle up quickly and then I have no problems running full out. The people I bought the boat from said it had always done that. I had the shift cable adjusted and it worked okay for a couple seasons. The repair shop said don't worry until I was having problems at full out. From other post it seems that this is a common thing with OMC drives. I am by no means an expert on boats just learning to fix my own. I see that you are in NC also. Well good luck and read other post here, they are invaluable.

KEP,
I have a 1988 cobra w/ 5.0L GM engine. While you are waiting for your manual to arrive why not ask what ever question you want to ask?

Do you have a problem, or are you looking for preventative maintenance?

Re: online manuals

Hey thanks for the help donwon. Jack, I am actually looking for preventative maintenence for a boat that has been sitting for about two years. So far, I have done a lot of engine stuff (oil, filter, plugs, break free in cylinders, turns over easily now, cleaned out 55gal of old fuel, ect) but now I am wondering about the drive before I fire it up. I took the water pump out and as expected it was toast. The thing that really scares me is a couple of the rubber fins are now M.I.A., and we both know that they went somewhere. I am also concerned about a filter or screen that the parts diagram shows in between the upper and lower. Is this part of the water system? I removed the upper cover plate and saw no oil on what would be (to me) the ring and pinion gear. I notice that there is a check/fill plug and what looks like a dip stick from the top. Basically anything that you think might be wrong I would like to take a look at even if it means complete disasembly. I repair manual transmissions often so with the book I am not scared to do this unless there are components I am not aware of. Don't hold anything back! Thanks Kep

Re: online manuals

Kep, When you took off that top plate you should have seen gear lube just covering those gears, the dipstick is for the lower unit fluid level. I would open the drain plug at the very bottom in front of the prop and drain any fluid into a clean container for inspection. The lower unit hold 64ozs I think, there is a fill plug about half way up. I usually run a little lube through before I install the drain plug, then I fill it up to the fill plug and top it off from the dipstick, check it again incase air has come up. About those rubber fins, I found mine in the power steering fluid cooler which is inline with the water intake behind the motor, not easy to access on mine. My fluid cooler froze and burst one time when I didn't get all the water out, took it to a radator shop $25.00. I don't know about the screen you are asking about, you need a manual, I have a Cylmer manual. Well good luck that is all I have now. Anyone please feel free to correct me where I may be wrong. :)

Re: online manuals

Hey Rev, welcome to iboats!!

Some secondhand parts are o/k to use, a starter motor probably isn't one of them. They sit around getting rusty and gummed up.

Have you considered reconditioning? Much cheaper than new.

BTW, it's good form to start your own thread instead of posting a new question in someone elses's thread. ;)

Aldo

Re: online manuals

thanks ,
i'm new at this so when you say start my own thread , what do you mean , also , i tried to use a car starter but it sat too close to the fly wheel and would bind up and turn the motor real slow . . even the recobditioned one is 170.00 so i am going to save up for it because i am redoing the boat this winter and hope to have it on the water next spring .
thanks again
god bless
rev.david brown

Re: online manuals

At the bottom of this page there is "post reply" (which is what you used) and there is also "post new topic" (which is what you should use). No harm, no foul. You'll know for next time.

DON'T use an automotive starter under any circumstances - they are a fire hazard when used in a boat.

Now, I'm not an OMC guru, but there are OMC people here - post a new topic in the I/O section and the OMC guys will point you in the right direction in regard to finding a cheaper recondtioned MARINE starter. $170 just ain't right.

Hope this helps.

Aldo
