I’ve a 1986 225 HP Evinrude. Once started, I can get one good full power run. After that, especially after shutting down, the engine will lag and stall when I attempt to go to full throttle. I suspect a faulty power pack, but am looking for other recommendations.
History: just replaced water pump, thermostats, plugs, and plug wires. Good water flow. Heads not overheating. Fuel lines all new. Engine has poor compression, between 75-90, but otherwise runs. Some “sneezing” at start. I just cleaned the carbs. Backfire or two at start when cold (verified at night start with carb cover off) but reed valves are ok (maybe not good as new, but “ok” - intact and closed at rest).
Engine has never run satisfactory for me. I bought it cheaply to test out how I like the boat (1980 Boston Whaler Revenge 20’). I will ultimately repower, but would like more trial time first. Thanks!
