Having trouble with 2003 Yamaha 8 hp "Hi Thrust" electric start engine. The engine will start on choke, but will not coninue to run if choke is released at ignition switch.

The engine will work fine if the choke is held in the on position for about 1 minute. The engine will die when the choke is released after that 1 minute, and will restart with no choke but is then loaded with gas. Once it has been cleared of gasoline, it runs fine until the next cold start, and then go through this program again.

It appeared to run ok cold if the engine electrical harness was disconnected at the power head, but I cant say for sure because we may have reached 1 minute interval. This leads me to believe that the dead man circuit in the ignition switch may be bleeding to ground and is removing ignition spark upon release of choke. (???) I cannot confirm this as the boat is on the water now and cannot recreate situation until boat comes to shore again

Any suggestions from anybody who has expierenced a problem such as this or similar to this, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your consideration

Re: Only runs on choke.

Sounds more like a fuel restriction, likely a carb cleaning is in order.

Re: Only runs on choke.

Sorry so long for this update. The suggested fuel system problem turned out to be cross contamination of electrical circuits in main harness.

Re: Only runs on choke.

Sorry, sorry, sorry,

This reply was so long in coming. The problem we expierenced up above turned out to be a wet connector in the bilge (???) that caused cross connection, which created spurious current to various systems at wrong time. Cleaned connector and water proofed. This has corrected problem. Much appreciate input from members who replied. Hope this might someone in future.

thanks again
