What is it you are trying to determine? There are lots of experienced guys on this forum in that vintage outboard. An OEM factory manual would be a wise investment. Check ebay or www.outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint.

1958 is not oold for a JohnnyRude. At 50 it is just barely old. It has to be over 60 to be oold. :)

Is this engine rope or electric start? If it is rope start there is no electrical system, just a dual magneto.

Please ask specific questions and we will help y'all out.

Unless it has an electric starter, the only "electrics" are the coil, points, and condensor wiring under the flywheel, plug wires and the kill switch (rubber bumper on the front).

You will need new coils, wires, points, condensors. That is the whole electrical system for your fastwin, as said before. You can get them from many places but to get them here at iboats, you will need part numbers. Holler if you need 'em.
As far as diagrams, all you do is pull the flywheel and it's pretty self-explanatory when you see it. The old coils will be held on with three screws, the new plug wires just push onto the coils. Points you will see and condensors also. Each are held on with obvious screws. You'll need some good grade 8, 1/4-20 bolts about 4 to 6 inches long and a harmonic balancer puller to pull the flywheel. Don't bang on it. Be sure to torque the flywheel nut to about 45lbs. when you reinstall it. You'll also need a new water pump impeller and probably a carburetor kit. Good chance you'll need a lower unit seal kit too. It'll probably cost you about 200-250 bucks to get it back in good shape but it will be just as reliable as a new one most likely. How about his pressure tank? Is it in good shape? Any rust inside? Just ask any questions you need to as you go along fixing it. There are many people on the forum that will assist you. It was less than a year ago that I was in similar shape as you and the experts on here helped me figure out how to fix mine. I have a '58 18 evinrude and it is my favorite motor next to my '57 18 johnson. I was able to fix them both with help here on the forum. By the way, if he decides he doesn't want to fix it there are a whole bunch of folks like me that would be more than happy to relieve him of all his "problems". I think the '58 evinrude 18 is the sharpest evinrude ever built. I hope he fixes it!:)

Here is what you may find: Cracked coils. Replace them. Make sure the replacements are adjusted so the laminated cores are flush with the machined edges of the posts they sit on. Second picture shows some that were not and are burned where they rubbed on the flywheel.

Thanks for help, I'll tell him to put down the beer and take off the flywheel.
I've been telling him "ignition", but he's ready for the river and trying to take shortcuts on the way.
Thanks

Before you pull the flywheel, check the compression as a baseline for future reference. Btw, it's a great engine, I have a couple of the '58's :)

Parts are plentiful from the early 50's on. Old is 40's and earlier when parts are harder to come by. Find your closest local OMC dealer for some and go online for others.
