OOPS 1989 9.9 lower unit Impeller change / Need advice to get it back together!!

I have done alot of lower units on the bigger horse Motors this one I think Im in trouble


I got the lower unit off but now when I put it back up Every thing is messed up R is N N is R and forward is R I have no idea how this happened how do I go about putting lower unit in Nuterual and sliding it back up so its correct when I shift tiller. I have not bought impeller yet since I noticed there was water in oil im guessing its the seal on the water pump. The motor is in good condition hope someone has been here before any help would be greatly appreciated !!

BTW when I dropped te lower unit It was in "N" then I read a thread to put it in "R" and it would drop down far enough to unbolt Impeller housing Thats how I got it off so the shift shaft with the keyway looking deal that shifts is not connected to lower unit. if this makes sense
